One of Georgia's truly fine journalist, Tom Crawford, dropped by my mailbox this morning to comment on the photographs I posted of the river in Towns County. Tom says,
"...
it's not that unusual for the lake levels to be down that far. Lake Chatuge was built by the TVA back in the 1930s for the generation of electricity, not as a source of drinking water, so the lake levels go up and down all the time with the region's power needs. There have been numerous dry summers over the past 20 years where a lot of water was released to run the hydroelectric generators and the lake levels dropped to something similar to what you saw last weekend. Not that I'm trying to minimize the negative impact of the current drought, of course."Thanks for the background information, Tom. I guess sometimes a picture doesn't actually tell the whole story.
